Overview
Not every dent or scratch requires a full collision repair. Door dings from parking lots, minor creases, hail damage and light scratches are often handled with more targeted techniques. The best method depends on the size and location of the damage and, most importantly, whether the paint is intact.
Paintless dent repair, often called PDR, uses specialized tools to massage dents out from behind the panel or pull them from the outside without disturbing the factory paint. It works well on many small to medium dents where the paint is not cracked or chipped. When the paint is damaged or the dent is sharp, stretched or on a body line, traditional repair with filler, primer and refinishing may be needed.
Scratches vary in depth. Light clear-coat scratches can sometimes be polished. Scratches through the clear into the base color usually need touch-up or refinishing, and scratches down to primer or bare metal should be addressed to prevent corrosion. A shop can tell you which category your scratch falls into.
What to expect, step by step
- Assessing the dent's size, depth and location, and the condition of the paint.
- Recommending PDR, conventional repair or a combination.
- Gaining access behind panels for PDR, sometimes removing trim or interior panels.
- Blending paint into adjacent panels for a consistent color match.
- Inspecting the result under proper lighting.
Key considerations
- Touch-up paint can protect a chip, but it won't look like a full refinish.
- Mobile technicians may offer PDR, but larger repairs need a shop setting.
- Body lines and edges make repair more difficult.
- Hail damage may be covered under comprehensive insurance, depending on your policy.
- Aluminum panels may be harder to repair with PDR.

What to have ready
- Mention whether the vehicle has driver-assistance features such as cameras, parking sensors or radar, since repairs near them may require calibration.
- Note your preferred timing and whether you need the vehicle back by a certain date.
- Describe whether the vehicle is drivable, and whether any warning lights, alignment changes or noises appeared after the damage.
- Take clear photos of the damage from several angles and distances, in good light, before anything is moved or repaired.
- Say whether you need a rental car or plan to rely on coverage for one.
Warning signs
- Pressure to sign over insurance payments before you have reviewed the estimate.
- No clear process for supplements when hidden damage is found after disassembly.
- No answer about whether driver-assistance systems will be checked or calibrated after repairs.
- Refusal to let you see the damage or the replaced parts.
- An estimate that is not itemized or that will not be put in writing.
What to ask before you commit
- Is my dent a good candidate for paintless dent repair?
- Will you need to repaint any part of the panel?
- How will you match the color, and will you blend adjacent panels?
- Do you offer a written estimate?
- Is there a warranty on the repair?
Quick answers
- Is it worth fixing small dents?
- Many owners fix them for appearance or resale. Dents with damaged paint can also lead to corrosion if left alone.
- What is paintless dent repair?
- It's a technique for reshaping dents without repainting, using tools to work the metal back into shape while preserving the original finish.
- Can deep scratches be buffed out?
- Light clear-coat scratches often can. Deeper scratches through the color coat usually need touch-up or refinishing.
